Desmond Doss was born on February 7th 1919 in Lynchburg,Virginia,United States was a United States Army corporal who served as a combat medic with an infantry company in World Wide 2. He was twicw awarded the Bronze Star Medal for actions in Guam and the Philippines. Doss furter distinguished himself in the Battle of Okinawa by saving 75 men, becomming the only conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Second World War who during combat had not killed a single enemy soldier. In fact, he refused to carry a gun. His only weapon were his Bible and his faith in God.
When he was a child, for example, he once walked 6 miles to donate blood to an accident victim a complete stranger after hearing about the need fot blood on a local radio station. A few days later, Desmond traveled down the same long stretch of road to give more. Instead, Doss spent his childhood doing things like flattening pennies on the railway near his Lynchburg, Virginia home and wrestling with his younger brother, Harold. He said that Desmond wasn't much fun to wrestle with because you could never win not because Desmond was particularly skilled, But because he'd never surrender and didn't know how to give up. From he was a child he always remember that no matter what he shouldn't killed anyone.
When Pearl Harbour was attacked, he was working at the Newport News Naval shipyard and could requested a deferment but he wanted to do more for his country. He was willing to risk his life on the front times in order to preserve freedom. So he joined army to be a medical soldier. He started to interested in medical because of his 1st wife. They met when Desmond took his friend that injured to the hospital that his wife works at. His wife was a nurse at that hospital. But his decision to joined army is not approved by his father. His father used to be an army too. That's why he is not approved his son decision.
He wanted to be an Army combat medic. As luck would have it, he was assigned to an infantry rifle company. His refusal to carry a gun caused a lot of trouble among his fellow soldiers. They viewed him with distain and called him a misfit. One man in the barracks warned him, "Doss, as soon as we get into combat, I'll make sure you won't come back alive." His commanding officers also wanted to get rid of the skinny Virginian who spoke with a gentle southern drawl. They saw him as a liability. Nobody believed a soldier without a weapon was worthwhile. They tried to intimidate him, scold him, assign him extra tough duties, and declared him mentally unfit for the Army. Then they attempted to court martial him for refusing a direct order to carry a gun. But they failed to find a way to toss him out, and he refused to leave. He believed his duty was to obey God and serve his country. But it had to be in that order. His unwavering convictions were most important.
And at Okinawa in the spring of 1945, Doss' company faced a grueling task: Climb a steep, jagged cliff sometimes called Hacksaw Ridge to a plateau where thousands of heavily armed Japanese soldiers were waiting for them. The terrain was treacherous. "It was full of caves and holes and the Japanese were dug in underground," says Mel Gibson, who re-created the battle in Hacksaw Ridge. "...The Japanese called it 'the rain of steel' because there was so much iron flying around."Under a barrage of gunfire and explosions, Doss crawled on the ground from wounded soldier to wounded soldier. He dragged severely injured men to the edge of the ridge, tied a rope around their bodies and lowered them down to other medics below. In Benedict's documentary, Doss says: "I was praying the whole time. I just kept praying, 'Lord, please help me get one more.' "
Veteran Carl Bentley, who was also at Hacksaw Ridge, says in the documentary, "It's as if God had his hand on Doss' shoulder. It's the only explanation I can give. Doss saved 75 men including his captain, Jack Glover over a 12-hour period. The same soldiers who had shamed him now praised him. "He was one of the bravest persons alive," Glover says in the documentary. "And then to have him end up saving my life was the irony of the whole thing."President Harry Truman awarded Doss the Medal of Honor in 1945. He died in 2006.
